Diabetes and related illnesses

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes occurs when the body produce very less or no insulin and also when the body doesn’t respond to insulin. The pancreas produces insulin that helps store the food’s sugar and fat.

There are mainly two types of chronic diabetes conditions,

  • Type 1 Diabetes: usually develops during childhood or adolescence
  • Type 2 Diabetes: is more common and can develop at any age, usually after 40.

However, some potentially reversible conditions of diabetes do exist, like:

  • Prediabetes: when the diabetes level is higher than the normal level but not high enough to be classified as diabetes.
  • Gestational: this type of diabetes develops in pregnant mothers and will not be visible after the child’ s delivery.

Diabetes Symptoms

Some of the symptoms of diabetes both type 1 and type 2 are:

Thirst Urinating frequently Extreme Hunger
Rapid Weight loss Fatigue Irritability
Blurred Vision Slow-healing wounds Frequent occurrence of infections
 Presence of ketones in urine

Diabetes Causes

The causes of Type 1 diabetes cannot be pinpointed exactly but immune attacks the insulin producing cells in the pancreas, thus reducing the insulin, in turn increasing the glucose levels. It could be due to:

  • Family History
  • Diseases or Infections of the Pancreas

In the case of Type 2 Diabetes and Prediabetes, the cells become resistant to the insulin and the body cannot use the insulin it produces to breakdown glucose due to:

Age Obesity Family History
Insulin Resistance Sedentary Lifestyle Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

In Gestational Diabetes, the hormones produced by the placenta making the cells resistant to insulin sustain the pregnancy. To counter this, pancreas produces more insulin. But sometimes, it is not enough and the glucose level in the blood rises.
