Baby and Child First Aid and Safety

Introduction

‘First aid’ means taking or giving immediate action to help someone who has been injured or has a medical emergency, such as a heart attack. Whether it is a baby, a child or an adult, the purpose of first aid is to keep someone alive, protect them from further distress, and providing immediate support to help them recover. It’s very important to know some first aid for a parent, nanny or someone who work with children.

 When to use first aid?

When caring for babies or children, we must pay attention in everything possible to keep them safe. But even sometimes accidents can still happen. In children most of the accidents happen at home. First aid will be required in a range of situations

  • Simple injury like a cut finger
  • Broken arm
  • When unconscious
  • Life-threatening situations like breathing difficulties as in severe asthma attack.
  • Choking child/baby

In any emergency situation where we need medical help, call the emergency number and ask for an ambulance. It is important to give first aid to keep a child alive until medical help arrives, for that; one should know the basic life support steps. A simple way to remember the steps to take with first aid is the letters ABCD that stand for:

  • Airway
  • Breathing
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR
  • Defibrillation
  • Some of the most common causes of injuries in children are
  • Falls, like when running or falling from a bike / height
