Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts are sacs or pockets filled with fluid found on the surface or within the ovary. Where most women develop ovarian cysts at some point in their lives:

  • Majority of these formations disappear after a while
  • Most of them are harmless
  • They present with little or no symptoms or discomfort

However, rupture of cysts can sometimes be a cause of concern. Some symptoms of ovarian cysts are:

  • Dull pain radiating to lower back and thighs

Types of ovarian cysts

Functional cysts:

  • Uncontrolled growth of follicles that usually develop every month
  • Usually harmless
    • Follicular cysts:
      • Form when the follicle does not rupture or the egg, is not released
    • Corpus luteum cysts:
      • Fluid accumulates inside the follicle as the opening of the egg is sealed
  • Dermoid cysts :
    • Not cancerous
    • Hair, skin, teeth, tissue etc are contained inside the cyst
  • Cystadenomas:
    • Develop from ovarian tissue
    • Are filled with mucous material or watery liquid

Adnexal Cysts

An overgrowth of connective tissues are formed on the organs surrounding the tissue called adnexal cysts. They can be either benign or malignant. Adnexal cysts can also occur in the ovaries and fallopian tubes. The course of treatment for adnexal cysts includes a physical examination, imaging tests and surgery.
