Sports Medicine

What is Sports Medicine?

Sports Medicine is a specialty in medicine dealing with the physical fitness and injury of sports people with preventive measures that can be taken while playing any sport or during exercise. Sports injuries are usually painful and can even end a good sportsperson’s career, if not treated properly and early. This is the reason why most sports teams have their own sports medicine team to care of their athletes.

Sports Medicine has helped to bring the influence of science closer to the act of promoting exercises. Sports medicine covers a wide range of topics that include:

  • Prevention and Treatment of Sports Injuries
  • Exercises that will improve health

Sport medicine also deals with the illegal use of anabolic steroids to enhance performance. Sometimes, the athlete is not aware of its illegal nature; sports medicine professionals in the team will help in educating the athletes of its use.

Who specializes in Sports Medicine?

Physicians specializing in sports medicine are doctors with medical degrees who have undergone the required residency training. In some countries, Sports Medicine specialization is a primary specialty. Usually it is a sub-specialty or second specialization of physiatry or Orthopaedic Surgery.

These physicians usually treat athletes and other individuals who are physically active. They have extensive knowledge in the field of muscoskeletal medicine, and treat injuries related to muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones. They are also trained to recognise chronic diseases that can affect the athlete’s performance like asthma, diabetes etc. and refer the same to relevant specialists for specific care.

These sports specialists deliver clinical interventions reducing the disease’s effect on physical activity and effective exercise in preventing the disease or ailment.
