A Colonoscopy or Lower GI endoscopy is conducted to diagnose diseases and defects in the lining of the large intestine - colon and rectum. The colonoscope is a long tube about the thickness of the index finger, flexible with a bright light fitted at its end. Apart from diagnosis some of the lesions or diseases like polyps can be treated as well. Polyps and other abnormal tissue of small dimensions can be removed through the scope. Foreign bodies can be extracted too.
