What is a hernia ?

When a fatty tissue or organ protrudes through a weak area in the surrounding muscle or the fascia (connective tissue) it is called a hernia. There are several types of hernias but groin hernias (inguinal type) are the most common. Some groin hernias can also be femoral. Patients experience discomfort during exercising or coughing. There is pain in the area which reduces when the patient is lying down.

Hernia Causes

Weakness in the abdominal wall or other areas can develop due to a variety of factors such as:

  • Twisting

Types of hernias

Hernia Treatment

  • Tension repair :
    1. An incision is made of over the hernia site
    2. Any protruding tissue is pushed back into its original position
    3. The incision is then sutured
  • Tension-free repair :
    1. A very common repair technique

    3. Two subtypes are: Flat mesh repair and three-dimensional mesh repair
  • Laparoscopic tension-free repair :
    1. 3 to 4 tiny incisions are made in the abdominal wall
