Thyroid disease clinic

The thyroid is a small butterfly shaped present in the middle of the lower neck. The main function of a thyroid gland is to control the body's metabolism and produce thyroid hormones, T4 and T3. These hormones inform the cells how much energy to be used. A perfectly functioning thyroid gland will maintain the right amount of T3 and T4 hormones to run the metabolism functioning at a fitting rate. The levels of thyroid hormones in the blood are monitored by the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland senses the irregularity or imbalance in the level of thyroid hormones and adjusts its own TSH hormone and send message to the thyroid to increase or decrease the secretion of hormones to attain balance.

When the thyroid gland produce too much or too less hormone, it affects the metabolism rate of the body. With elevated levels of thyroid hormone the condition is hyperthyroidism and with low levels of thyroid hormone the condition is referred to as hypothyroidism. Numerous factors affect the increased or decreased production of thyroid hormones.

People of all ages can develop Thyroid Diseases and problems and the chances are more in women than men.

Treatment for thyroid disease

The aim of treatment for any thyroid disorder is to restore normal levels of thyroid hormone in the blood. Treatment for both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism is through medication. Synthetic hormone tablet that replaces missing thyroid hormone levels in the body are prescribed for hypothyroidism. It is necessary to conduct regular TSH test to monitor the level of hormone in the blood and will adjust the dosage accordingly.

In cases of hyperthyroidism, the thyroid hormone production is normalized by administering drug therapy to block excess hormone production. Other method includes radioactive iodine treatment that disables the thyroid and Thyroid Surgery to remove part or the entire thyroid gland.
